Ultrasounds: Get the Facts
A positive pregnancy test is just the first step. Next up, no matter what route you decide to take for your pregnancy, you will need to get an ultrasound. Our clinic offers free limited obstetric (OB) ultrasounds.
Why do I need an Ultrasound?
- Pregnancy confirmation
- Determine gestational age (how far along you are)
- Determine if pregnancy is within the uterus
What to Expect
An ultrasound is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce a visual image of the inside of your uterus. Usually, a woman has an ultrasound early in her pregnancy to confirm she’s actually pregnant and again later to check on the health of the fetus.
During a non-invasive limited OB ultrasound, which is what we provide, the registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS) applies a gel-like substance to your abdomen. The gel helps transmit sound waves. A hand-held device called a transducer is rubbed over the gel to record the echoes of the sound waves it picks up. It’s those echoes that create an image on a computer screen.
